12-Day Uzbekistan Workshop Itinerary
Day 1: Tashkent
On day one you’ll arrive in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. You’ll be transferred to your hotel; with most flights arriving at night or early in the morning, you’ll have time to rest before the adventure begins in the afternoon with a visit of the incredible Tashkent Underground/Metro (off limits to photographers until 2019) and the Hazrat Imam Mosque and Hazrat Imam Square in the late afternoon.
Day 2: Khiva
After breakfast we’ll take a quick flight to the ancient city of Khiva, entrenched behind its high walls. Once a feared slave trading hub, the inner city has been lost in time, with little changing over the last century. We’ll photograph the architectural wonders of this living “museum” during the beautiful afternoon light, the sunset and the blue hour. We will also introduce you to street photography, empowering you to see the city in an entirely different way.
Day 3: Khiva
Today we’ll delve deeper into the ancient city. Starting from sunrise, we’ll discover more architectural beauties and wind our way through the narrow streets, seeing the city come to life through its people. Lunch will be enjoyed at the hotel before enjoying the afternoon light, sunset and blue hour in a different location.
Day 4: Khiva to Bukhara
After breakfast, we hit the road, headed through the desert for the holy city of Bukhara in central Uzbekistan (475 km, 6/7hr drive). We’ll arrive in time to shoot sunset from a rooftop overlooking the city.
Day 5: Bukhara and its artisans
We’ll start with an early stroll in the streets of Bukhara, shooting the morning light and exploring the use of shadow around the Abdulaziz Khan Madrassah. After a nice breakfast, we head for the city outskirts, where we’ll have the chance to meet with local families and witness artisans at work. We’ll arrive back in town to enjoy sunset from another beautiful spot.
Day 6: Bukhara – Samarkand
Another morning will be spent to explore Bukhara, and we’ll leave Bukhara after lunch by train to reach Samarkand in late afternoon.
Day 7: Samarkand
Today we have the full day to enjoy Samarkand, playing with light and shadow among the city’s incredible Madrassahs. Combining these detailed backgrounds with local people going about their daily lives can make for interesting street photography opportunities.
Day 8: Samarkand
Another full day to enjoy another part of Samarkand and its markets and other surprises in the countryside near by.
Day 9: Samarkand to Ferghana
We’ll start early, making our journey to the Ferghana Valley, arriving mid-afternoon. Here, we’ll have the chance to visit a traditional market, spend time with a shaman, as well as have intimate access to normal Uzbek people in their homes.
Day 10: Ferghana
Our morning begins with a trip to an energetic livestock market and an enormous bazaar. We’ll enjoy lunch with an Uzbek family before spending the afternoon at a silk factory.
Day 11: Ferghana
We’ll spend the morning with various crafstpeople, from bakers to blacksmiths, as well as a family making traditional clay ovens. After lunch, we will transfer back to Tashkent by car.
Day 12: Departure
